| 13 - THEY CAME FOR THE GOLD, THEY STAYED FOR THE YACHTING–THE BIRTH OF RACING ON THE S.F. BAY
4:00 PM-5:00 PM 13/10/2020 https://nextvillagesf.org/event/they-came-for-the-gold-they-stayed-for-the-yachting-the-birth-of-racing-on-the-s-f-bay/2020-10-13/ The California Gold Rush attracted 300,000 fortune seekers from around the world—half sailed through the Golden Gate on square-riggers. These sea-hardened 49ers transformed a sleepy village of 200 into a brawling boomtown of 150,000. As gold nuggets rolled through the dance halls of San Francisco, some who “struck it rich” overnight began building, betting on, and racing boats that they couldn’t have afforded a few years earlier. Ron will recount the “wild west” origins of racing on San Francisco Bay, which focuses on the history of the early days of San Francisco. About The Speaker: Over the last 63 years, Ron Young has competed in >3,000 races (often >100/year) on 4 continents. In 2018, Ron was named (by the 123-year-old Pacific Interclub Yachting Association) the Lloyd Ryland Yachting Historian of the Year for producing over 800 talks on hundreds of sailing and nautical topics. Ron calls himself a serial entrepreneur with three start-ups that achieved nine-digit exits totaling almost $1 billion and a track record of success at companies that lead their markets, including: Levi’s, CVS, Electronic Arts, Nokia, Yipes, Cisco. He founded a global telecommunications industry association, the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF), which has more than 280 member companies worldwide. Ron’s initiatives have been honored by more than 50 business and advertising awards, including a CLIO (for Levi’s advertising), an ADDY, an ANDY, a dozen Product of the Year award’s, Red Herring Top 100, Top 10 and # 1 Company awards. Ron is a Life Member of Mensa. This event is organized by the Stanford Women’s Club of San Francisco who have invited us to co-sponsor it. Their Club is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding this year. In only 90 years, NEXT Village will celebrate our 100th anniversary. 3:00 PM-4:00 PM 14/10/2020 https://nextvillagesf.org/event/disaster-preparedness-and-response-d2u/2020-10-14/ Be Ready: Disaster Preparedness and Response 10/14/20, 3-4 PM We all know we need to be prepared, but too often people put off planning for disasters until it’s too late. Earthquakes are a matter of when, not if, for the Bay Area. While San Francisco has been spared the wildfires raging throughout the state, fires do happen here. If you had to evacuate your home with only minutes notice, are you ready? Join us to learn about the most important steps that you can take to be more prepared for a disaster, and to better respond when it occurs. We’ll focus on actions you can take to prepare including building your support network to help you through an emergency, creating an emergency plan that includes evacuation procedures, building a “Go-Bag” of essential items to take with you, and more. We’ll also cover what to do during and after a disaster, such as signing up to receive emergency notifications, heeding warnings and recovering afterwards. Use this event as your motivation to take control and make a plan. If you already have an emergency “Go-Bag” pull it out and take stock so you can replace expired items and make sure you have what you need ready to go. Presenter: Doug Mosher is the Program Manager for the Oakland Community Preparedness & Response (OCP&R) program, under the non-profit Oakland Firesafe Council. Doug has helped neighborhoods organize and prepare for disasters for nearly 20 years. He is CORE and FEMA trained, a Ham/amateur radio volunteer and is passionate about preparedness. By day Doug is the co-founder and CTO of SeniorFusion, a non-profit initiative to help seniors and caregivers understand and better utilize technology designed for health, wellness and safety.

6:30 PM-8:00 PM 24/10/2020 https://nextvillagesf.org/event/annual-halloween-fundraiser/2020-10-24/ Annual Halloween Fundraiser video event on Saturday, October 24th at 6:30pm, featuring the smart comedy of THE ONE AND ONLY JOSH KORNBLUTH! About Josh: Josh is a Fellow at the Global Brain Health Institute, based at UCSF. Catch his new monologue, Citizen Brain, premiering (on Zoom) in October (info at https://tinyurl.com/y63ccncc); and check out his videos on brain science and social justice (confusingly, also titled “Citizen Brain)” at citizenbrain.org. Go to his website, joshkornbluth.com to learn more about his work! Tickets for any or all events start at just $100 and will be available through our website soon. How it works: You can host your own team of 6-8 friends for a Murdery Mystery (we’ll give you everything you need for a successful event at a time that works for you) or you can let us know you want to be added to one of the teams that we are arranging for Oct.12 or 19th. It’s not Halloween without costume contests, so create your own, snap a photo and send to us by Oct. 9th, or we can take your costume photo via Zoom, or by sending a volunteer to your home to snap that winning shot of you, or your pet, or your produce,or all three! Entries will be shared during the grand finale on October 24th. NEXT will also provide a link to the famous movie, “The Birds” for you to watch from home, followed by a Zoom conversation and Q&A. Proceeds from Halloween In The Village will help us continue to provide support to seniors aging-in-place and services to those riding out the Covid 19 at home. Please join us for any and all events.

| 27 - TALES FROM SAN FRANCISCO’S 1915 PANAMA PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION
2:00 PM-3:00 PM 27/10/2020 https://nextvillagesf.org/event/tales-from-san-franciscos-1915-panama-pacific-international-exposition/2020-10-27/ The Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 was San Francisco’s first world’s fair. It was a stunning achievement that took more than a decade of planning, overcoming insurmountable odds, including civic corruption, the great earthquake and fire of 1906, intense competition from rival host cities and the outbreak of World War I. The stories in Panorama are about visionaries, innovators, artists and entrepreneurs whose inspiring accomplishments lifted our City and forged its modern blueprint. This is a fascinating and eye opening look behind the scenes at how San Francisco rose from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and fire and welcomed the world to visit. Join us for this glimpse at the world’s fair that changed the landscape of the SF Marina and showed San Franciscan’s could overcome disaster. Presenter: Author and journalist Lee Bruno, author of Panorama: Tales from San Francisco’s 1915 Pan-Pacific International Exposition. His curiousity to learn about his great grandfather’s role as one of the primary organizers for the PPIE led to his unveiling fascinating people and intersecting stories about business, economics and politics from 100 years ago. Bruno’s most recent book is Misfits, Merchants, and Mayhem: Tales from San Francisco’s Historic Waterfront, 1849-1934, winner of the 2019 Independent Book Publisher Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal for History. His reporting on business, technology and science has appeared in such publications as The Economist, The Guardian, MIT Technology Review and other publications.
