Meet new people, learn, explore, keep active, and have fun with friends old and new — even while sheltering in place. District 2 University (D2U) is NEXT Village SF’s latest initiative expanding our classes, activities, social events and more. Most events are free and open to all adults 60+ in San Francisco. You do not need to be a member of NEXT Village to attend.
All events are open to anyone 60+ living in San Francisco and are currently free as part of NEXT Village’s effort keep people connected while we practice social distancing and staying safe.
7/31, 11:30 AM Show and Tell — Arts, Crafts & Hobbies
Show off a project you’ve been working on — whether you’ve been quilting, woodworking, puzzling, knitting, planting a garden, fixing up a car, cooking or anything else — show it off! Brag, tell us why you enjoy it, share tips or explain why we should consider taking up a new hobby! BONUS – we’ll have our first NEXT Village Zoom Face Mask Fashion Show during this event! No need to share anything — join us to enjoy others’ handiwork!
8/11, 11 AM Show off your Collection! Laughs & Conversation over Zoom
Turns out many of us have collections of things. Whether you collect penguins, stamps, books, or art, here is your chance to dust off a few items and tell us how your collection began. If you are not a collector, join us for the stories! This is an informal discussion group with no agenda other than to have fun.
8/14, 11 AM Solo Agers: Meeting the Challenge
Join us for our kick off Solo Agers event in which Dr. Sara Zeff Geber, author of Essential Retirement Planning for Solo Agers: A Retirement and Aging Roadmap for Single and Childless Adults will talk about options and the decisions to be your own best advocate in the years ahead! If you are single or partnered — with or without children — who is aging alone for any reason, you are a Solo Ager.
8/18, 11 AM – 12:30 PM What Happens to your Garbage & Recycling? Unveiling the Mysteries of your Colored Bins!
The Recology team is going to give us a unique behind the scenes tour of what happens to your waste and take the confusion out of what goes in which colored bin. This is an opportunity to explore something you contribute to daily … without giving much thought to what happens next!
8/21, 2 PM Stress Busters – 5 Steps to Deal with Stress
For many of us, it’s hard not to be stressed and anxious in the midst of challenging times. In Stress Buster workshops, we’ll learn how stress starts and a simple effective five step process to reduce stress and help you better respond to any situation.
8/24, 1 PM Let the Games Begin: Chess for You
Chess is an activity that stimulates the brain, passes time, and can even be social (and distanced!), creating friendships even when not sitting across the table from each other. All it requires is a chess set. Chess players will be matched by skill level at the kick off meeting . Play together in your own time via email.
8/25, 2 PM Armchair Travel: Independence Day in Belize
The next episode of our popular Armchair Travel series goes back in time to 1981 when one of the last colonies of the British empire, Belize, gained independence. Phil Williams will describe how his adventure took him from the Mayan ruins at Altun Ha, to the bars of Cinderellatown to the governor’s mansion at midnight when the British flag was lowered for the last time.

Italian Conversation Group – Weekly on Thursdays at 11 AM
Join other Italians, Italian-Americans, and non-native Italian speakers who want to practice Italian in an informal and welcoming environment.

D2U is NEXT Village SF’s latest initiative to bring high-level intellectual, cultural and social experiences to adults 60+ in SF’s Supervisorial District 2 (Russian Hill, Marina, Cow Hollow, Pac Heights, Presidio, Seacliff & nearby neighborhoods). D2U is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services’ Dignity Fund.
You do not need to be a NEXT Village member to join us for D2U events or to live in District 2. All adults 60+ in San Francisco are welcome to attend D2U programs. Invite your friends to join you for events!
Events will be held in locations in District 2 when it is safe to meet in person. In the meantime, join us on Zoom from wherever you are while we shelter in place.
D2U is all about YOU! You can simply attend events — or YOU can be a part of making them happen by joining one of our Events Committees or our Advisory Board. Sign up for an Events Committee or subscribe to our email newsletter when you register for an event on the Event Registration Form.
