The FDA has approved the first at-home cervical cancer screening test by Teal Health, offering a more accessible alternative to traditional Pap smears. The self-collected test, which has shown accuracy comparable to clinical screenings, could help close persistent screening gaps, particularly in rural areas and among certain Asian American subgroups with historically low screening rates.
Cervical cancer remains a serious health concern in the U.S., with about 11,500 new cases and 4,000 deaths each year. Recent research shows rising diagnoses among rural women, especially non-Hispanic white women, while urban rates have plateaued. Mortality is 42% higher in rural counties.
Experts say cervical cancer could be eliminated with comprehensive HPV vaccination and screening efforts. The availability of at-home tests may be a step toward reaching underserved communities. Teal Health’s kits will launch in California next month.
