Intermediate Stress Busters workshops or discussion groups alternate on Thursday every 2 weeks to help us get through the pandemic and beyond together! These Intermediate events are intended for people who have participated in some of our Introductory Workshops Series. (We hope to start another Intro Workshop series in the future.)
In our monthly Stress Busters workshops, Eileen and Gary provide lessons on simple steps you can use to reduce stress. Upcoming workshop dates: 3 PM Thursdays, March 18 & April 15.
In addition to workshops, they also offer a monthly informal discussion group to provide a more interactive opportunity for us to share and discuss concepts from the workshops in more depth. Upcoming discussion group dates: 3 PM Thursdays, March 4 & April 1
Discussion groups have become a wonderful monthly gathering for people to compare notes on what has been stressing us out, how we reacted, and learn how we might apply the Stress Busters techniques to future situations.
If you were not able to attend all of the Introductory series Stress Busters workshops or want a refresher on the 5 steps, visit http://www.123dingsum.org/how-to-ding-sum to familiarize you with the information we’ll be discussing during the Intermediate workshops and discussion groups.
Speakers – Eileen Chan and Gary Ow are native San Franciscans. Both have volunteered with Stress Busters since the organization was founded over 30 years ago. Eileen is trained as an optometrist and Gary Ow works in computer technology. They are married with three grown children.

Unique Experiences Series: Working in Afghanistan in 2008-2009 to Develop the Rule of Law A unique photographic glimpse into the life of a San Francisco attorney working in Afghanistan Monday, March 8, 2021 – 1 PM/Pacific
Why, you ask, would someone endure the danger of war and leave behind the comforts of a San Francisco home to work in Afghanistan? Mary Noel Pepys, an international attorney, will share her experiences helping to develop the rule of law in Afghanistan from 2008-2009 and the extraordinary opportunity she had to support the Afghan legal community in enhancing the criminal justice and corrections systems.
She’ll describe and show photos of what it was like to live in a 10′ x 20′ shipping container for 20 months in a heavily-fortified U.S. Embassy compound in Kabul, unable to tour Afghanistan except from inside armored vehicles and fixed wing aircraft, wearing a flack jacket to all her meetings and responding to emergency warnings not for fire, but for impending missiles.
Mary Noel managed 60 American attorneys and correction officers who worked throughout Afghanistan to provide assistance to the Afghan government, to Afghan prosecutors and prison officials. She’ll take you on a unique journey of an international attorney working in Afghanistan during the war.
Mary Noel concluded her work in Afghanistan with the belief that while the road to justice and equality is, indeed, long, Afghans are no different from American citizens. They dream of a better future for themselves, their children and their country. They dream of education and health care, of the comforts of home and of a society that flourishes from legal enterprises, not illicit drugs. They dream the same dream as Americans, that one day equal opportunity will become more than a concept, but a reality for all.
Presenter: Mary Noel Pepys is a senior attorney with a specialization in the rule of law, specifically international legal and judicial reform, and corruption within the judiciary. Since 1993 she has helped emerging democracies develop justice systems that ensure the protection of citizens’ human rights, equal treatment of all individuals before the law, and a predictable legal structure with fair, transparent and effective government institutions.
Mary Noel has worked in over 45 countries, lived five years in six former communist countries, and 20 months in Afghanistan as the Justice Advisor for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement of the U.S. Department of State. While in Afghanistan, Mary Noel focused on strengthening the criminal justice system and the correctional system.
Previously, from 1984 to 1993, she worked at Heller, Ehrman, White and McAuliffe and later at her own law firm as a land use attorney. From 1982 to 1984, she served in Rome, Italy as a legal officer for the Multinational Force and Observers, the international peacekeeping force in the Sinai, which oversees the security arrangements of the 1978 Camp David Peace Accords. Prior to that, Mary Noel worked in Washington, D.C. for Ambassador Daniel J. Terra at the Department of State and for Congressman Henry S. Reuss, Chairman of the Committee on Banking, Finance, and Urban Affairs. She served as a law clerk to Justice Thomas A. Caldecott, Presiding Justice of the California Court of Appeal. Mary Noel Pepys earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law and currently serves on its Board of Directors.

A unique opportunity to share what’s on your mind regarding this often-unspoken subject. It’s not morbid, we promise! If ever we needed a place to talk about death, this is it!
Death Café’s (http://deathcafe.com/what/) have been steadily gaining fans. At Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death. A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. Even though you will all be in your homes, please enjoy some tea and cake during the call!
People had so much fun enjoying our February Variety Show, that we are doing it again. We’re looking for some talented people to sing, dance, tell jokes, juggle, play fiddle or anything else you’d like to entertain our group with.
After the show, we’ll have some social time to give people a chance to meet some new people for conversations. We’ll use the Zoom Breakout Room feature so you’ll have a chance to get to know 4-6 new people in a small group. We’ll provide icebreaker questions to make it easy to start conversations and have fun!
We invite you to wear green or enjoy a green beer (or any other beverage of your choice) for our show and Cèili (pronounced kay’lee, it’s an Irish Social Gathering)! You are welcome to invite friends, no NEXT Village membership required.
Want to be a part of NEXT Village’s St Patrick’s Day Variety Show? Email donna [at] NEXTVillageSF.org to to audition. Email us to let us know about the talent you’d like to share with the group.

Stress Busters Intermediate Workshop – 5 Steps to Deal with Stress
Stress comes in many ways. It’s that uneasy feeling we get when we’re upset — whether it’s because we’re angry, worried, depressed or disturbed for other reasons. For many of us, it’s hard not to be stressed and anxious in the midst of challenging times.
In our ongoing Stress Busters workshops, we have been learning how stress starts and an effective method to reduce stress and help you better respond to any situation in a helpful way, instead of getting upset.
This “Intermediate” Workshop is targeted to people who have taken some of the Intro Stress Busters workshops previously and have familiarity with the five steps: 1. Stop, 2. Assess, 3. Decide, 4. Do, 5. Re-evaluate.
If you haven’t taken any of the Introductory Workshops or need a refresher, we invite you to look at the website to learn about the steps at http://www.123dingsum.org/how-to-ding-sum so you can be familiar with them. We hope to do another Intro Stress Busters Workshop series in the future — watch for it in the NEXT Village newsletter.

Looking for a place to have conversations with people about current events and random topics in a casual, informal gathering?
Join us for our monthly Coffee n’ Conversation. It’s the Zoom equivalent of meeting a few friends at the local coffee shop.
Our March theme to kick off conversation is TELL US A STORY.
We’ll start the group with introductions and if you want, you can share a 3 minute story … it can be a work or volunteer project you’re proud of, a tale from the place you grew up, what brought you to San Francisco, or something you’d want to include in your memoirs.
From there, conversation can move on to discuss whatever is on people’s minds.
BYOB – coffee, tea, water or anything else!
We welcome suggestions for starter questions or topics for future months.

Judy O’Shea is an installation artist based on Telegraph Hill and Inverness who has built successful careers in both the corporate and art worlds.
After working in the biotechnology industry for more than 25 years, O’Shea transformed from an executive to an installation artist after she and her husband bought an 18th-century water mill in the Roquefort cheese region of France Profonde. There, they restored the mill to grind their own flour and walnut oil.
They originated an artist-in-residence program, and for seventeen years they hosted artists from France and the U.S. O’Shea’s large-scale installation art has been shown in both France and the U.S., most recently at the Sonoma Valley Museum.
O’Shea will talk using a series of photos about her experience of meeting, befriending, and finally becoming part of the community in a rural area of France where Roquefort sheep outnumber humans ten to one. She’ll explore the restoration of a ruin of the mill, learning French on the fly, and the ridiculous situations that occur in a foreign culture. She started out looking for cultural differences and was surprised by her final conclusions, all of which she’ll share.

Have you been learning Spanish during the pandemic and wish you could practice it? Or if you are a fluent speaker, do you wish there was a place you could converse in Spanish from a safe social distance?
Join us for our new NEXT Village Spanish Conversation group for conversation in an informal and welcoming environment.
This is a casual gathering where people can use, practice and help each other with their Spanish. No judgement, no pressure!
Please note that this is a conversation group, not a class. There is no instructor. Basic familiarity with Spanish is requested, however no need to be fluent, just willing to try!
Zoom login & phone dial in number will be sent in reminder email from NEXT Village 24 hours prior to event.
