Stress Busters INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOPS – 5 Steps to Deal with Stress
Stress comes in many ways. It’s that uneasy feeling we get when we’re upset — whether it’s because we’re angry, worried, depressed or disturbed for other reasons. For many of us, it’s hard not to be stressed and anxious in the midst of challenging times.
In Stress Buster workshops, we’ll learn how stress starts and a simple effective method to handle your reaction to situations. You’ll learn a five step process to reduce stress and help you better respond to any situation in a helpful way, instead of getting upset. Stress Busters (also known as Ding Sum) has been serving seniors in San Francisco for over 30 years, reaching 900 people through monthly in person seminars, and now via Zoom!

What if you don’t have family or friends you could count on to make financial decisions for you if you have an accident or health crisis?
A common issue many Solo Agers face is who to trust to make critical decisions for them if something happens.
Solo Agers are single or married people who don’t have children or whose children or extended family live far away or are not part of your daily life.
If you don’t have family or friends available or appropriate to assist you with bill-paying or to manage your affairs should something happen to you, licensed private fiduciaries are a valuable option to consider. Jean McClune and Dana Conklin will explain in an easy to understand way what fiduciaries do, if one might be right for you and how to find someone to meet your needs. Topics they’ll cover include:
What is a licensed private fiduciary?
What services do private fiduciaries offer?
What roles can they serve in?
How are they licensed?
How to find, interview, & assess a fiduciary for your particular needs?
In this series, we continue to explore and understand options available to Solo Agers. Fiduciaries have been recommended by some previous speakers in this series, so we are excited to have Jean and Dana join us to help you understand how a fiduciary could help you.
Presenters: Jean McClune, CLPF and Dana M. Conklin, CLPF are professional fiduciaries licensed by the state of California to provide estate and trust administration services by serving in the roles of trustee, executor, agent under a power of attorney (for finance or healthcare), or conservator (of the person or the estate). They have a combined 30+ years of providing custom fiduciary services to seniors in Northern California.

NEXT Village wishes you a Happy Chinese New Year as we begin the year of the Ox. We are excited to invite you to a presentation by SF North Beach businessman Jim Schein, about his book “Gold Mountain Big City” about San Francisco’s Chinatown. His book is based on Ken Cathcart’s 1947 Illustrated Map of San Francisco’s Chinatown, which is a colorful and celebratory time capsule of San Francisco’s Chinatown—the largest Chinese community outside of Asia. It shares the stories of the unique businesses, culture, and people encountered by map illustrator Ken Cathcart between 1939 and 1955.
Jim Schein will share images from the book, stories of its making, the 1947 map, and provide an insight into the mid-20th century culture of both San Francisco and the Chinese American diaspora. Gold Mountain Big City drops the reader into a world of curious characters, revealing a glimpse of the immigration story so universal to America in both its celebratory aspects and its darkness.
Presenter: Jim Schein lives in San Francisco and is the owner and operator of Schein & Schein Old Maps along with his wife, Mari Schein. His book is available through Alexander Book Company and Amazon. Schein & Schein Old Maps was opened in 2003 in North Beach. Jim and Mari’s love of maps, history, travel and independence led them to operate Schein & Schein in North Beach for 18 years. They have just recently let go of the North Beach location and have moved the primary business online and invite you shop the inventory on their website at https://www.scheinandschein.com/

Even though COVID-19 is on everyone’s mind, there is still a lot of confusion. Rumors, misinformation and even politics can make it difficult to separate fact from fiction about COVID-19 and vaccines. To help us sort through what is and is not known, Dr. Jay Levy, Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, will address some common questions and concerns. Topics may include how scientists were able to develop COVID-19 vaccines so quickly and if they are safe; how vaccines help protect against infection; and how long protection may last. He’ll also discuss factors particularly relevant to older adults and those who care for them. While he does not have a crystal ball to tell you the specific date you can get a vaccine or when life will return to normal, he will explain in an easy to understand way what is currently known. We’ll also have time for Q&A.
PRESENTER: Dr. Jay A. Levy is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Laboratory for Tumor and AIDS Virus Research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He obtained his M.D. from Columbia University after graduating from Wesleyan University and joined the UCSF Department of Medicine and the Cancer Research Institute in 1972. Dr. Levy co-discovered HIV in 1983 and during the last 3 decades has dedicated his efforts to developing anti-HIV therapies, an AIDS vaccine, and potentially a cure. He also discovered a novel immune response that controls HIV infection through the production by CD8+ lymphocytes of an antiviral factor, CAF. Dr. Levy has published 14 books and over 600 articles in virology, immunology and infectious diseases.
Please note: we know there is much information and disinformation and that many people have opinions and feelings about the topic of COVID-19 and vaccines. This event is intended to educate from a virologist’s perspective. This is not a partisan or public debate forum. Dr. Levy will provide his point of view about about COVID-19 and vaccines for people to consider for themselves.
This event is jointly organized by NEXT Village SF and Aging2.0 San Francisco Chapter.

In light of the Senate confirmation hearings for Justice Amy Coney Barrett, as well as other Constitutional issues, UC Hastings Professor Rory K. Little will provide an overview of the judicial philosophies of “originalism” and “textualism,” and what they mean for issues in the U.S. Supreme Court today.
He’ll also discuss the viability of the Supreme Court as an independent branch of the federal government.
Some critics argue, and Professor Little will discuss, whether recent presidential appointments to the Court and the perception the Supreme Court is overly partisan has eroded the Court’s position as the independent cornerstone of our democracy based on the rule of law.
This event is organized by our partner Stanford Women’s Club of San Francisco who welcomes NEXT Village members and friends to join them on what promises to be an interesting Zoom event to help us all understand more about what has been happening in the Supreme Court.
About The Speaker: Professor Rory K. Little is the Joseph W. Cotchett Professor of Law at U.C. Hastings College of the Law where he teaches Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Legal Ethics. He is a graduate of Yale Law School and clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Brennan, Stevens, and Stewart (ret.) – all in one year. Prior to teaching full-time for the past 26 years, Professor Little served as a trial and appellate lawyer for the U.S. Department of Justice. He also served as an Associate Deputy Attorney General under U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and Deputy Attorney General Jamie S. Gorelick. He is currently “Of Counsel” to McDermott Will & Emery, and in the Fall of 2019 was a Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School, teaching “Professional Responsibility with a Criminal Law Twist.”
Most people have heard of the word “humanism” but may not be clear what that means in practice. In this presentation, members of the non-profit Bay Area Humanists (BAH) will give an overview of the basic principles of humanism. Board members will also share briefly our paths to humanism, as well as an overview of the organization and the mission it serves.
