Author Talk: Alex Pellegrini “Tales of a Native Son”

Our very own Alex Pellegrini, who many NEXT Village members know through his popular conversation group done with his wife Leslie, will be talking about his book Tales of a Native Son. The book is a memoir that includes an account of his experience conducting the Men’s and Women’s Conversation Groups at the Aquatic Park Senior Center that many of you have attended over the last 7 years.

This fascinating memoir has plenty of humor, loads of compassion, and much practical advice for seniors and the families that love them. Many NEXT members have said they’d love to hear from authors, so we are thrilled to have a native son of San Francisco and fellow NEXT Village member Alex share his experiences! Death Café – Circle of Sharing — TWICE Monthly!

Tuesday, June 2 & 16th, 1:00 PM

Many of the Death Café attendees asked for a little more connection during this crazy time. Kudos to our fearless leader, Meg, for agreeing to facilitate two times per month. A unique opportunity to share what’s on your mind regarding this often-unspoken subject. It’s not morbid, we promise! If ever we needed a place to talk about death, this is it!

Death Café’s (http://deathcafe.com/what/) have been steadily gaining fans. At Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death. A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. Even though you will all be in your homes, please enjoy some tea and cake during the call!

Buon Giorno! Italian Conversation Group (D2U)

Weekly on Thursdays, 11am – Noon

Join other Italians, Italian-Americans, and non-native Italian speakers who want to practice Italian in an informal and welcoming environment. This is a fun, casual Zoom gathering where people can use and practice their Italian. No judgement, no pressure!

Tiny Habits:  small changes can make a positive difference in your life

Three-week series: June 12, 19 and 26^th at 11AM

Wouldn’t it be nice to use our time Sheltering in Place to make some tiny, easy and even fun changes to develop some new good habits and behaviors!  Start thinking of a goal or habit you’d like to accomplish. Maybe you’d like to get in better shape? Or learn to meditate? Or manage your anxiety?

Ellen Khalifa, a Tiny Habits coach will guide this interactive workshop to help us take control and make positive change in our lives! Tiny Habits® is based on the methodology developed by BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford University. This will be a 3-week workshop starting June 12.

Financial Q&A with Brandon Harvey

Here’s an opportunity to ask those financial questions you’ve wanted to find the answers to during another Q&A session with Brandon Harvey of the Legacy Wealth Management Group. You might already know Brandon; he’s a great NEXT Village volunteer who helps members with their computer issues, and he works in finance.

Many seniors have major financial questions concerning end-of life planning, banking investments, and financial planning. The Q&A sessions are meant to give seniors an outlet for those questions, and give a source of planning in order to reach those goals.

Tech Teach In – Get more from your smart phone (Android and I phone)

While NEXT continues to offer one-on-one tech support to you in lieu of our regular Tech Teach In at the library, we are offering three special small group teach ins in June.

Learn how to get more out of your cell phone, learn how to take a selfie (maybe even with your Thank you, Volunteers poster), or spring flowers, skyline, whatever you fancy, and email it, or upload to Facebook. Also, learn how to use Zoom from your phone, and how to watch a wide variety of interesting content from sites such as YouTube.

SF Double Feature Matinee:  History + Movie Discussion:
Julius Castle & “The House on Telegraph Hill”

We’ve got a special treat for you this month — we’re combining a movie group with some history of a novel San Francisco location. Whether you watch the movie “The House on Telegraph Hill” or not, you’ll want to join us to hear about the past and future of the landmark Julius’ Castle building.

• Julius’ Castle owner and Telegraph Hill resident Paul Scott will tell us about the history and future of Julius’ Castle – the castle-like building atop Telegraph Hill. Formerly a speakeasy, restaurant and movie set, Paul will tell us what has happened since the restaurant closed in 2007 and his plans for the future.
• Optional: watch the movie “The House on Telegraph Hill” BEFORE this event so we can discuss the movie (movie was partially filmed at Julius’ Castle and locations in SF).
