Try Something New Seven Day Challenge
It’s a new year. Start it off right by joining NEXT Village’s Try Something New Seven Day Challenge.
We’re making it super simple to get outside of your normal routine and try something new. Who knows, you might just discover something you really enjoy doing or a good habit you want to continue!
At our kick-off event, we’ll have a list of ideas for inspiration, or you can come up with your own. The key is to make sure things are manageable and do-able in a relatively short period of time. Include things you think will be fun, as well as a few that challenge you to make positive improvements in your life.
Our Zoom meeting for the Challenge will be casual as we want you to be inspired by each other. Rather than a formal speaker, we will break into small groups so you can share your ideas or get tips from others. Who knows, you might even find someone who wants to join you in doing something. It can be fun to have company – even when socially distanced trying a new Zoom activity together!
Examples of ideas include: walk 10 minutes longer than normal on a new route; call a friend or family member you haven’t talked with in a long time; put on a song and dance around like no one is watching; try a new recipe; try a group activity you’ve never done before (NEXT offers lots of options – from Trivia to Improv to Drawing to Writing); perform a random act of kindness for someone else; write down three things you are grateful for before you go to bed; etc.
Each day during the week, write down something new you did that day and pat yourself on the back.
For those who want to follow up after a week to compare notes, we’ll have an optional debrief on Jan 12 at 1 PM so you can give others ideas on things they should try and share things that surprised or delighted you.

Armchair Travel: Siberia -- North of Novosibirsk
This month we send you to Siberia with Phil Williams. Phil will describe what happened in 2000 when, with the Russian economy near collapse, he was asked to help decide the fate of the half-completed Stalin-era Boguchany Dam on the Angara River, the river that flows out of Lake Baikal.
He found himself dealing with the consequences of a little known saga of the Cold War, when the US and USSR were competing for the title of builders of the world’s biggest dams.
His story will lead us from the songs of Woody Guthrie to the arrest of Paul Manafort.
Presenter: Phil Williams is a NEXT Village SF member and retired civil engineer.
